Premiums for Medicare Part D Expected to be Lower

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that Medicare drug premiums will be lower than expected. CMS claims that due to robust competition among drug plans, prescription drug plans will offer coverage at a lower cost than independent experts had projected. CMS estimates that when Medicare prescription drug coverage begins in January 1, 2006, the average monthly premium of $32.20, about $5.00 less per month than previously estimated. Beneficiaries should begin signing up for the new Medicare program by mid-November, 2005.
