Bio
Thomas L. Kirkland Jr. is a shareholder at Copeland, Cook’s Ridgeland office. Mr. Kirkland represents a wide variety of healthcare entities, including hospitals, physicians, physician practices, home health agencies, nursing homes, therapy providers, and managed care companies. He has represented clients in various transactions directly associated with the operation and acquisition of healthcare facilities, reimbursement appeals, fraud and abuse allegations, and employment matters.
Mr. Kirkland also consults with clients on legislative matters. He has been a member of the Mississippi State Board of Health, where he served on the Tobacco Fund Planning Committee, the Long Term Care and Alzheimer Committee, the Public Health Funding Committee, the Rehabilitation Services Committee, and the Certificate of Need Committee. Mr. Kirkland also has extensive experience in the area of business litigation.
Mr. Kirkland has frequently been invited to speak before a number of associations and at various seminars concerning healthcare transactions, reimbursement matters and fraud and abuse issues.
A member of the Hinds County and Madison County Bar Associations as well as the Mississippi Bar, Mr. Kirkland also belongs to the National Health Lawyers Association and the Federation of Insurance and Corporate Counsel. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America in Healthcare law. Mr. Kirkland graduated from Mississippi State University (B.A. with honors, 1975) and earned his law degree at the University of Mississippi (J.D., 1978).
Admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in Mississippi, including the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, Mr. Kirkland has also practiced in state and federal courts in Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama.
